In Jeffersonville, NY, a somewhat steep, winding driveway leads to the Hubert House. Nestled on 20 private acres, the Hubert House is just five minutes into the heart of town—but perfectly secluded, surrounded by woodland forest, bucolic country roads and lakes.

The house is available exclusively by Red Cottage Inc., a curated home rental company based in the Catskills. Owners Aaron and Esther bought the house in August of 2016 after months of searching for the perfect place. “The house itself was in great shape and we didn’t really have to do any major renovation work. We just did more of a re-imagination of what the interiors could be with what we had to work with,” Aaron told us. “After looking for a house for years in Ulster County, we had just started to explore Sullivan County and we knew as soon as we saw this one that we wanted it.”

Inside and out, the property has tons to do. But venturing out, its location in Jeffersonville is central to other up-and-coming towns like Livingston Manor and Callicoon—with their breweries, farmer’s markets, and even a vintage movie theater. A thirty minute drive will take you to Narrowsburg, a beautiful little town on the Delaware River with great shopping and dining.

But many will check in at the Hubert House and not leave—there’s so much to do! The outdoor spaces offer an array of activities all year long. A large yard with multiple gardens is home to the fire pit, perfect for star gazing. Across the yard, its beautiful pool sits by a gazebo, which is equipped with a grill. On each side of the house, screened in porches only add to the outdoor amenities. Porch one has an in-floor hot tub, along with lots of comfy seating; porch two is great for outdoor al fresco dining, also featuring a grill. Last, guests can take the short walk to Hubert House’s lakeside property, where a canoe is available to explore a private lake.

Inside, the Hubert House is laid out over two floors. The lower level features a large, comfortable living room with wood stove, record player and loads of sunlight. The kitchen is fully equipped and next to a separate dining room, looking over the back yard. There are two bedrooms on each floor, bringing the guest capacity to eight. All rooms have storage space, writing desks, and cozy textiles.

As far as design goes, “[Esther and I] definitely have a bit of a formula going between our apartment in NY, in both our offices and now Hubert House,” Aaron told us. “We always stick to a mostly black and white palette, with lots of wood elements and green plants. We did the same at Hubert House, adding Hudson Bay and Native American blanks and textiles to add splashes of color,” Aaron told us. The result is simple, effortless cool. “I would say the overall vibe we were going for was kind of a minimal, modern country house, with comfort being key. We want groups of friends to come together for a inspiring upstate escape.” An inspiring escape, it is.

Street Scene in Callicoon, NY.

The Hubert House is located in Jeffersonville, a sweet little town thats centrally located between several other charming towns. A fifteen minute drive will take you to the charming towns of Callicoon or Livingston Manor. On Saturdays, the Callicoon farmers’ market is amazing; local businesses selling everything from fresh produce to baked goods, cheeses, hard cider, and more. In the same town, a vintage movie theater from 1948 features indie, 1st-run, and foreign films. Grab a bite at the newly reopened Western Hotel, housed in an 1852 Victorian Mansion; Ba & Me, an outdoor-seating Vietnamese spot; or sample some local beers at the Callicoon Brewing Company.

In Livingston Manor, there’s a ton of new businesses popping up and lots of great food options. Spend the morning perusing Main Street, hitting up Morgan Outdoors, Catskill Arts Society, Nest, and Upstream Wine and Spirits. For lunch, grab a sandwich or stock up on provisions at Main Street Farm; then grab some ice cream at Madison’s Street Stand. For dinner, check out the al fresco dining and bocce courts at brand-new pizza joint The Kaatskeller. Don’t pass up the cocktail menu!

Last, Narrowsburg is another great town about thirty minutes from Hubert House–but offers the most adventurous daytrips, too. There’s an incredible hike at the Tusten Mountain Trail, which ascends 600 feet before leading to some incredible views of the river. Water sports fun can be had by taking a dip in the Delaware River underneath the bridge in town; or take a tube, canoe or kayak down the river from Lander’s River Trips. For lunch or dinner, grab a seat on the patio at The Heron, overlooking the Delaware River.

Where To Eat & Drink Around Jeffersonville: Farm-to-Table Fare Above a Gas Station, or a Restaurant with a Bowling Alley

The dining room at North Branch Inn.

There’s a lot listed above, but for just meals only, there’s a few other spots not to miss. First, North Branch Inn is about ten minutes down the road, serving up hyper-local fare in their airy tavern and dining room. Grab a seat at a communal table, talk to your neighbor, then finish the night with a round of manual-style bowling. Henning’s Local is another local favorite for dinner, serving up farm-to-table fare in a restaurant that’s literally atop a gas station. (Sounds weird, is totally genius.) Last but not least, for a killer brunch–or just coffee–check out the Clair Inn. It’s just down the road from Hubert House in Jeffersonville. Try the veggie burger!
