Old Souls, Tara and James Caroll’s shop in Cold Spring, is named in homage to James’ fly fishing business after a compliment given him by a client many years ago. Ideally located on the Hudson River and beside lots of hiking trails, Old Souls supplies goods for ‘field, stream, camp and home’.

Three years ago James and Tara, both from Upstate New York–who met in Buffalo–were living in Brooklyn and would escape city life as often as possible to ski, fish and hike. After buying a home in Cold Spring which was within easy reach of Manhattan via train, James spotted a vacant shop on Main Street and persuaded Tara to leave her finance job to run Old Souls.

James designed the shop giving it a warm, comfortable feeling; walls are clad in reclaimed wood, the antler chandelier and hunting and fishing trophies give the ambience of a cabin rather than a shop. James, who also has a hardwood flooring business in New York, continues to commute to the city and spends his weekends either in the shop or out on the river guiding and teaching fly fishing.

Tara and James are committed to selling and supporting American brands associated with good quality, which grow better with age and can be passed on to future generations. Every weekend, daytrippers arrive in Cold Spring, and depending on the season, will buy socks, gloves or hats at Old Souls. But it’s the support of the local community that has greatly impressed Tara and James, who are inspired and excited to experience the charm of owning a shop on Main Street.
