It’s been a cold few weeks here in the Catskills.

Don’t get us wrong: we love Upstate winters – even when temps drop below zero, which happens quite a bit. Much of the region is blanketed in snow, ski season is in full swing, and fireplaces are roaring. That being said, even the most die-hard winter fans can attest that despite loving the season, it can be tough to shake the winter chills.

Below, find a collection of our favorite getaways with saunas, hot tubs, and heated pools that help you do just that. Scattered throughout the region, this list dives deep into the Catskills, as far east as the New York/Connecticut border, and as far north as the Adirondack High Peaks.

From wellness-centered resorts to private cabins in the middle of ski country, we got you. Save the below to start planning your next winter getaway, and we’ll see you out there.

Between the Shawangunk Ridge and Catskill Mountains, find Inness: a high-end boutique hotel that recently added a spa to its repertoire of amenities. Laid out over 7,000 feet, the Inness Spa features five private treatment rooms, a relaxation nook, a fully equipped fitness studio and dojo, and a bathhouse. The bathhouse – our favorite part of the spa – is flooded with natural light that spills into a heated indoor tranquility pool. The spa also houses a dry sauna and a steam room for guests to use on their own, between private treatments, or after a workout in the studio.

Start your morning by exploring Inness’s 220-acre property. Several trails wind through the landscape, providing easy-to-navigate pathways for winter walks. Afterward, spend the remainder of the day warming up and relaxing at the spa. For evening cocktails and dinner, head to the on-site restaurant – you won’t need (or want) to leave Inness for meals.

Hotel Kinsley has made quite a name for itself in the city of Kingston, with nods from publications like Conde NastVogueForbes, and Esquire assisting its rise to popularity. Spanning over four different buildings in the Stockade District, this boutique hotel, restaurant and cocktail bar has recently added wellness programming to its repertoire. In addition to a private massage room and compact gym, Hotel Kinsley is also home to two infrared saunas, located at its Wall Street and Pearl Street locations (and open to all Kinsley guests).

Spend the morning and afternoon shopping around Kingston – we love LovefieldCapital Vintage, and Hamilton & Adams in Uptown; Red OwlZaborski’s, and At Land in Midtown; and Hops PetuniaMaison Après, and Folk House Collective in the Rondout area. Lunch spots include Camp Kingston and Rosie General; for an afternoon drink, West Kill Brewery’s Kingston Taproom or Rough Draft. Two hours north of NYC, Troutbeck boasts one of our favorite Upstate wellness facilities. The Barns at Troutbeck offers a long list of wellness treatments, including sound baths, movement classes, acupuncture, and more. Additionally, visitors can enjoy two different saunas: one traditional (complimentary to all guests), and one infrared. The Barns also introduced a partnership with Wildsmith earlier this month, adding treatments like facials and massages to the already expansive spa menu.

For adventure beyond the grounds, we recommend the Stissing Mountain Trail at the nearby Thompson Pond Preserve. This challenging-yet-rewarding hike ends at the Stissing Fire Tower, which overlooks the stunning landscapes of northern Dutchess County. Afterward, head to Troutbeck’s restaurant for dinner (we recommend checking out the Monday Pasta Nights if your stay extends beyond the weekend.)

Parkston Schoolhouse’s wood-burning sauna sits at the edge of the private 1.5 acre property, surrounded by dense forest. Photo: Escape Brooklyn

Before becoming one of our favorite Airbnbs in the Catskills, Parkston Schoolhouse (originally built in 1870) once served as the school for children of every grade level in the Livingston Manor area. However, since being converted from a single-room schoolhouse to a two-bedroom home, this historic building has become a quiet cottage getaway in the mountains. Steps away from the front door, a cozy wood-burning sauna is open for guest use, adding to the relaxing nature of the schoolhouse. The grounds also feature historic relics, private creek frontage, and a deck with a warming chiminea for winter evenings under the stars.

Despite its secluded feel, Parkston Schoolhouse is just a five-minute drive from the lively town of Livingston Manor. Plan to spend a day exploring the town, starting with a coffee at Main Street Farm. Then head to Catskill Art Space to admire the exhibited artwork. Afterward, pop into some of the town’s many boutiques (we love HomestedtOld Souls and Long Weekend to name a few) before grabbing a bite at The Walk-In, which transforms into Stumble Out Bar & Restaurant at night. For dinner in town, enjoy wood-fired pizza at The Kaatskeller before or after grabbing a drink at Sunshine Colony. Check out the EB Guide to Livingston Manor for more trip inspiration.
