By |2025-04-08T18:42:12+00:00September 12th, 2024|Weekend Guides|

Nestled in the bucolic heart of the Catskills, North Branch, New York, is a small hamlet renowned for its picturesque landscapes and historic charm. With a population hovering around a few hundred, North Branch is characterized by its historic homes, perfectly patinated storefronts, rolling farmland, and the gentle flow of the East Branch of the Delaware River. Though the hamlet – yes, we said "hamlet" – is by definition tiny, North Branch is central to some of our other favorite towns, including Callicoon, Roscoe, and Livingston Manor – there's no lack of things to do or see in the area. (Unless of course, you want to do nothing, which is welcome here too.)

Once an industrial epicenter of Massachusetts, the small town of North Adams is best known for two things: Mount Greylock, the highest mountain Massachusetts – and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, aka MASS MoCA. Tucked away in the Berkshire Mountains, this weekend escape is equidistant from NYC and Boston, about 175 miles or a three hour drive. Since MASS MoCA’s opening in 1999, the museum’s presence has helped to put this former mill town back on the map. Its brick factory building campus once churned out textiles and machine parts; now, it's the cornerstone of this burgeoning arts community, where many new businesses of all kinds call home. Approximately 120 miles from NYC, the town of Roscoe has earned its place on the map for attracting anglers from around the globe. The town, affectionately dubbed Trout Town USA, is renowned for its plentitude of streams, lakes and reservoirs – abundant with trout – that wind their way through its sprawling forests.
