Historically, Fort Orange was a 17th Century trading post on the banks of the Hudson River, which would later become the site of the City of Albany. Friends Caroline Corrigan and Katy Smith, met in an Albany college ten years ago, fell in love with their adopted town, and decided to stay. Both have a strong sense of community, and were looking for a way to give back when they spotted a “For Rent” sign next to the coffee shop they had both worked as students. Inspired by shops in Brooklyn and L.A. that support local artists and businesses, they opened Fort Orange General Store last May. They included Fort Orange in the name as a tribute to their location.
Katy, a nurse, and Caroline, a graphic designer who designed the company branding, maintain their jobs as well as running the shop. Neither have plans to give up their first jobs, as they love the variety that the different positions bring to their lives, but they do manage to spend two days a week together in the shop. They balance their busy lives and have found a rhythm, acknowledging that Caroline’s eye is spot on for design choices, whilst Katy is the best with the numbers and accounting side of the business. Candles, apothecary, and jewelry are best sellers.
Caroline and Katy are thrilled that many of their artists, due to sales in Fort Orange General Store, have been able to quit their part time jobs to pursue their passions full time. Despite their busy lives, they also find time to host popular workshops including embroidery, macramé and giant paper flower making. They serve wine and snacks at these events, making it a great way for people with similar interests get together and socialize.
