It already seems like forever ago, but Escape Brooklyn Summer Camp came and went in the blink of an eye. September 11-13, some fifty campers came out for a weekend of hiking, tubing, camping and drinking. The event was sponsored by Peekskill Brewery, who supplied us with a keg Uncommon Lager, and Hipcamp who helped spread the word. In a few photos, this is our story.
Day One: Arrivals, beer, and sparklers. Campers arrived as early as 3 p.m. and as late as 11 p.m. While some made their own fires, many joined us at the communal one at our site to share our keg, make some new friends and play with sparklers.
Day Two: Saturday hiking, tubing, and getting rained on–again. We set out for the Tanbark Trail right in town at 11 a.m. sharp. At the top of the trail, someone spotted a sleepy porcupine in a tree right at the overlook. The crowd, though quiet, disturbed him from his rest and he adorably scampered up a tree for us.
Then came the time for tubing. Shortly after we got on the water, and true to Escape Brooklyn Summer Camp form, it began raining. Luckily the creek was fairly warm, fast, and everyone survived the mighty Esopus Creek! We spent the remainder of the afternoon drinking beer, swimming in the creek and hanging out under the canopies. Some opted for clothes, while others did not. Once evening rolled around, we went to Brio’s for pizza, beer, and entertainment from our buddy Matt Heckler.
Sunday: the weather cleared up, we drank a lot of beer, and hung out some more in the creek. Sometime during the long rainy night, the weather broke. We woke up to misty skies, and some said goodbye while others stuck around and cooked breakfast over the campfire. The sun finally peeked out, burned the mist off the mountains, and gave way to a lovely afternoon.
